On the entries marked too early
Early is indistinguishable from wrong, until it isn't.
Several initiatives did not get market traction: Ford Foundation solar in 1980, Topaz Bridge in 2007, Clean Solutions in 2009, BioChar Global in 2010, JustTagIt in 2017. In every case the technology functioned, and the business case was validated ten to thirty years later.
What I misjudged was not whether the tech worked or that the business case was real. It was whether capital, regulation and buyer urgency would arrive at the same time.
A company that is early does not fail gracefully. It fails by running out of financial or market runway while being correct.
Dig deeper and understand market context and capital dynamics.
The operating conclusion I now apply to everything: technology readiness is not market readiness, and the distance between them is measured in capital cycles, not product cycles.
You can be ahead of the adoption curve and not perceive reality as it is. Don't confuse market metrics for insight.
The diligence question is not does this work. It is who is compelled to buy it, and when are they compelled. If nobody is compelled, it is a timing bet and should be sized as one.
